Course description

This qualification focuses on the skills and competences required to be able to assist the delivery of sports or physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach. Coaching topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the coaching assistant
  • Rules and regulations
  • Safe coaching practice
  • Inclusive coaching practice
  • Deliver and evaluate coaching activities
  • Technical requirements of sport and physical activity

Who is the course for?

The qualification is designed for those who wish to become involved in coaching at an assistant level, and to have responsibility for the delivery of coaching activities under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.

It is an entry point to coaching, depending on the ability and confidence of the learner. It is directed at learners who have an interest in sport or physical activity.

What’s the value of this course?

This qualification is ideal for learners who are seeking an entry point to coaching and are looking at supporting a more qualified coach.

Learners may gain opportunities as a paid or voluntary assistant coach. The qualification is also recognised as the industry standard level 1 qualification for coaches by UK Coaching and maps to the CIMSPA professional standard of Assistant Coach. Learners should be able to approach their National Governing Body and see if they would accept recognition of prior learning – meaning that if you wanted to attend a level 1 sport specific course, the course may be shortened to recognise the learning that you have already covered.

Learner eligibility

Prior to registration learners are required to:

  • Be appropriately identified
  • Be at least 14 years of age
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking reading and writing)
  • Have access to a laptop and good WiFi to complete the e-learning modules. Any special learning requirements must be made clear at the registration process.

Format, duration and cost

Our open courses are delivered through remote e-learning. Learners will be required to:

  • Phase 1: Complete a series of e-learning modules and tasks within their 1st4Sport qualification portfolio (approximately 6 hours of e-learning which excludes portfolio tasks)
  • Phase 2: Deliver 1 x 15-minute physical activity /sport session in their own environment. This can be videoed and guidance will be provided*. Prior to this session taking place, learners will have the opportunity to discuss their plan with a Coach Developer. 

Registration is valid for a 1-year period. Therefore, learners could complete phase 1 initially and then progress onto phase 2 when appropriate. Re-assessment fees would be applicable if learners were deemed not yet competent in phase 2.

*Video assessment

Should video assessment not be a preferred option, please contact us so we can discuss alternative assessment methods (for example an assessor coming to visit you in your environment). An additional fee will be required if you choose this option.

Progression

Learners could progress on to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching, 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching in Multi-Skills, or on to a sport-specific coaching qualification at level 1 or at level 2. The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used to progress to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching sport, activity leadership or sports development.
