Qualification Purpose

The purpose of the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF) is to: provide a qualification to support achievement of the Governments school sport policy and lasting legacy of the 2012 Games; qualify learners to deliver/ support the delivery of low risk activities1 that contribute to a physical education and school sport programme through curriculum-based and/or extra-curricular activities; and prepare learners for employment in a school sport setting through providing an introduction to opportunities for them to work as a physical education and school sport professional for e.g. as a higher level teaching assistant [HLTA], teaching assistant [TA], sports coach, sports development officer, sports volunteer or sports leader.

Important note: Learners aspiring to deliver sport-specific/ high risk activities within a physical education and school sport programme may be required to hold a Level 2 National Governing Body coaching qualification as well as the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF). Further advice should be sought from the Association for Physical Education and the local authority in which the learner will be operating.

Qualification Structure

The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF) comprises eight units of assessment. Learners must achieve a total of 28 credits (minimum) to attain the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF); which must be achieved through completion of all 8 mandatory units.

The qualification requires learners to show that they can deliver physical education and school sport activity programmes, which meet the technical requirements of the qualification as specified in the Practical Syllabus. To qualify for the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF),
learners must successfully complete/have credit for all eight units.

Achievement of the qualification is normally through attendance on a course of training, a programme of assessment and work experience in a school environment.

Unit Information

Learners must achieve a total of 28 credits (minimum) to attain the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF); which must be achieved through completion of all 8 mandatory units.

Registration Period

The learner registration with this qualification is valid for a period of three years from the date of registration/beginning of the learning programme (whichever is the earlier).

Qualification Prerequisites

Prior to registration, learners are required to:

  • be at least 16 years of age to attend the programme of training
  • hold a Level 2 physical education or sport related qualification, examples include:
  • the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport (QCF)
  • GCSE in Physical Education (Grades A-C)
  • a Level 2 National Governing Body of Sport coaching qualification
  • a Level 2 BTEC in Sport
  • a Level 2 qualification in sports/activity leadership or
  • a 1st4sport recognised equivalent
  • be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Progression

The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF) provides learners with guidance on further opportunities, including how to:

  • contribute to physical education and school sport activity programmes as a sports coach, activity leader and teaching assistant
  • make informed choices about an appropriate career in physical education and school sport
  • develop an understanding of supporting learning in physical education and school sport activity programmes
  • develop physical education and school sport knowledge and skills that can be applied to different educational and school sport-related settings, such as coaching
  • pursue further career opportunities such as a physical education teacher.

While this qualification is delivered through the medium of physical education and school sport, the skills may only be used by learners to work in a school environment or other sport setting, under the appropriate guidance and supervision.

Learners may choose to develop their skills and knowledge through: qualifications; an apprenticeship; work experience; or by participating in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities offered within sport, schools and other related organisations.

Qualification progression routes may include:

  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching <<a sport>> (QCF)
  • 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Physical Education and School Sport (QCF)
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF)
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Principles of Coaching Sport (QCF)
  • 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Sports Development (QCF)
Assessment

To achieve the qualification, learners are required to complete all tasks within the portfolio. Specific requirements are given below;

Unit 6 – Plan a Physical Education and School Sport Programme

As a minimum, learners must produce evidence of appropriate comprehension of this unit via performance, simulation, tasks and/or assignments.

To achieve the unit, learners are required to have, in summary, assessed evidence:

  1. the production of a profile for a minimum of three pupils. This should describe the pupil(s’) current level of achievement for their Key Stage, be matched against baseline achievement and identify the pupils’ potential level of achievement. All performance factors must be drawn from the Level 3 technical syllabus developed for Physical Education and School Sport and mapped to the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Physical Education.
  2. Contribute to the design of an outline plan for a Physical Education and School Sport Programme, which should be based upon the pupils you have profiled. The outline plan should be for a term and include timetabled and extra-curricular activities.
  3. production of a more detailed plan for a minimum of ten PE lessons and two hours of extra-curricular activities associated with an aspect of the outline plan for a Physical Education and School Sport Programme
  4. production of individual lesson plans for a minimum of ten PE lessons and two hours of extra-curricular activities associated with an aspect of the outline plan for a Physical Education and School Sport Programme
  5. production of a recorded evaluation planner that will identify the methodology and timings as to how learners will:
    • monitor and evaluate pupils’ progress against baseline achievements and
    • monitor and evaluate own contributions that will lead to improved delivery of the Physical Education and School Sport Programme

All sessions must be drawn from the Level 3 technical syllabus developed for Physical Education and School Sport and be mapped to the National Curriculum for Physical Education.

Unit 7 – Deliver a Physical Education and School Sport Programme

This unit will be assessed through the assessment of written activities and observations of delivery practice.

To achieve the unit, learners are required to have, in summary, assessed evidence:

  1. that they are competent in managing a safe teaching and learning environment for pupils and others. This must be observed by an appropriately qualified assessor on a minimum of two occasions
  2. The production of a record of the management of a safe teaching and learning environment over a minimum of ten PE lessons and two hours of extra-curricular activities associated with an aspect of the outline plan for a Physical Education and School Sport Programme.
  3. the delivery of a minimum of ten PE lessons and two hours of extra-curricular activities associated with an aspect of the outline plan for a Physical Education and School Sport Programme two of which must be observed by an appropriately qualified assessor (on separate occasions)

All sessions must be drawn from the Level 3 technical syllabus developed for Physical Education and School Sport and be mapped to the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Physical Education.

Unit 8 – Review a Physical Education and School Sport Programme

This unit will be assessed through the assessment of written activities and observations of delivery practice.

To achieve the unit, learners are required to have, in summary, assessed evidence:

  1. that they are competent in managing a safe teaching and learning environment for pupils and others. This must be observed by an appropriately qualified assessor on a minimum of two occasions
