Qualification Purpose
This qualification is for individuals who are involved in supporting schools in the delivery of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA).
Important note: Learners aspiring to deliver sport-specific/ high risk activities within a physical education and school sport programme may be required to hold a Level 2 National Governing Body coaching qualification as well as the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport (QCF). Further advice should be sought from the Association for Physical Education and the local authority in which the learner will be operating.

By successfully completing the qualification, learner will:
- Understand schools and the principles of teaching PESSPA
- Safeguard children and young people in PESSPA
- Maintain health and safety of pupils in PESSPA
- Support Children to develop through PESSPA, relative to their expected development
- Advocate the benefits of PESSPA for pupils
- Implement diversity and inclusion principles in PESSPA
- Support assessment for learning in PE
- Plan, deliver and review a PESSPA unit of learning
Impact on Pupils
Successful completion of this qualifiction will enable learners to take on a role to support the delivery of PESSPA programmes in a school to support pupils to:
- Experience high quality PESSPA
- Be active physically and mentally
- Be engaged in PESSPA, both in school and their communities
- Keep learning, pursue their interests and push their skill development
- Grow through positive experiences of PESSPA
Qualification Prerequisites
Prior to registration, learners are required to:
- Be at least 17 years of age to attend the programme of training and 18 to be certificated
- Hold a Level 2 physical education or sport related qualification, examples include:
- A Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport
- GCSE in Physical Education (Grades A-C)
- A Level 2 National Governing Body of Sport coaching qualification
- A Level 2 BTEC in Sport
- A Level 2 qualification in sports/activity leadership
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).
Learners will also need to have some experience of physical education, school sport and physical activity and be able to access a school environment in order to successfully complete the course assessment requirements.
Registration Period
The learner registration with this qualification is valid for a period of three years from the start date of the qualification delivery.
Qualification Structure
Learners will be required to attend learning sessions for each of the qualification modules and successfully complete all assessment tasks.

All modules must be completed.
Assessment
A Delegate Evidence Record (DER) is provided by the Leadership Skills Foundation to enable learners to collect the necessary assessment evidence for the theoretical content of the course, covered in units 1 - 8. The DER can be found to the left of this page.
Learners will also need to undertake tasks associated with a competency-based assessment related to units 9, 10 and 11.
Progression
Learners will gain transferrable knowledge and skills which allow them to:
- Contribute to physical education and school sport activity programmes as a sports coach, activity leader and teaching assistant
- Make informed choices about an appropriate career in physical education and school sport
- Develop an understanding of supporting learning in physical education and school sport activity programmes
- Develop physical education and school sport knowledge and skills that can be applied to different educational and school sport-related settings, such as coaching
- Pursue further career opportunities such as a physical education teacher.
While this qualification is delivered through the medium of physical education and school sport, the skills may only be used by learners to work in a school environment or other sport setting, under the appropriate guidance and supervision.
Learners may choose to develop their skills and knowledge through: qualifications; an apprenticeship; work experience; or by participating in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities offered within sport, schools and other related organisations.
Qualification progression routes may include:
- Leadership Skills Foundation Level 3 Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity
- Leadership Skills Foundation Level 4 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism.
